Know the Meaning of Rotational Moulding of Polyethylene Water Tanks. How is it done?

Know the Meaning of Rotational Moulding of Polyethylene Water Tanks. How is it done?

Nowadays, polyethylene water storage tanks are trending. Due to its popularity and availability, most manufacturers are focussing on the manufacture of this type. The main elements used to manufacture polyethylene water tanks are water tank molds, polyethylene powder and gas fired ovens. It was discovered many years ago but reached its potential only after the commercialization of its production.

The basic raw material used to roto mold water tanks is Linear Low-Density Polyethylene(LLDPE). LLDPE has a high degree of short and long chain branching which gives molten LDPE its desirable flow properties. It is most suitable for manufacturing of water tanks. This process is known as free radical polymerization.

Rotomolding is one of the most popular plastic molding techniques. In this process, a measured quantity of powdered polyethylene resin is placed into the mold of the tank. The powder is then compounded and mixed to include the desired color. Additionally, UV stabilizer is added to make sure that the color does not fade away when exposed to sun rays and a release agent to remove the tank from the mold is also included. The oven needs to be preheated before the mold is placed there. After placing it in the oven, the mold is rotated bi-axially in order to coat the inside of the mold evenly. Be careful with the time spent in the oven. The tank should neither be overcooked or undercooked. Both the situation will lead to defects and imperfections in the tank. The entire manufacturing process is computer controlled. After removing the mold from the oven, it has to be cooled properly. The cooling process allows the polyethylene to set and to shrink slightly in order to remove the tank from the mold. This is the most critical step in ensuring a perfect tank. After the mold has cooled enough, remove the tank. And you are ready to repeat the process to make another one.

Most tank manufacturers try to make as many water tanks as possible without changing the mold. Changing the mold every time will add a lot to the cost of production. This is the newest technology in the manufacture of polyethylene water tanks. This makes the tank stronger, durable and completely safe for human consumption. Water stored in these LLDPE water tanks can be used for different household and commercial purposes without a worry.

Watch Out! Your Plastic Water Tank is Overflowing.

Watch Out! Your Plastic Water Tank is Overflowing.

Plastic water tanks rank the best out of all on the basis of a number of advantages that it holds over the others. While using a ploy tank, our main concern remains when the tank fills up with water and overflows. After all, where does all the water go? We often come across that many poly tanks on houses with one or two downpipes going inside the tank but nothing coming out. This makes the water overflow to the sides of the tank and on to the ground. Sometimes an overflow kit is installed on the sides of the tank without any pipework. Pipework is required to divert the waste away from the tank. This is not a preferable situation for a poly tank. This can cause erosion around the base of the tank.

What is the solution? Let us get to know how can we prevent our plastic water tank from overflowing and checking erosion. The solution lies in plumbing the overflow away from the tank. This is most important when there is dust or sand at the base of your tank. There is always a 90 mm overflow fitting in most plastic water tanks to plumb off with standard 90 mm stormwater pipe. It can be installed anywhere around the tank and can be easily fitted through slight curves and in the walls of the tank. It doesn’t really require a flat surface.

There are few options that where should the water go to prevent flooding.

  • In urban areas, a stormwater line is an option out to the street. The water from an overflowing tank can be directed to the stormwater line.
  • Buy another tank to store excess stormwater if there is limited space in your rainwater tank and it often overflows. This also gives you the extra benefit of additional water catchment which is very important.
  • If you reside out of town, pipe the water at least two meters away from the rainwater tank. Again it is important to divert it down the hill away from your house. Watch out where the water is flowing after coming out from the end of the pipe. It is quite obvious that you do not want to flood a garden, shed or courtyard everything your tank overflows.

By making provision for these simple but useful ways, you can stop flooding from an overflowing tank. You can also seek an expert’s guidance if needed. Penguin Tank is one such name.

How to Prevent Underground Water Storage Tank Flotation?

How to Prevent Underground Water Storage Tank Flotation?

Underground water storage tanks are used for storing rainwater underground. They are manufactured in a way that it can be buried underground easily and these tanks cannot be used above ground. It does not store only rain water but a high-quality plastic water storage tank can store potable drinking water as well.

Tank flotation is a serious issue and it can damage the tank or other attachments of the tank. In order to protect the tank from flotation, you need to follow the procedures and guidelines for tank installation. When we throw a half-filled bottle into the water, it floats because the air within the bottle exerts an upward force. This process is known as buoyancy. The same way, underground water tanks are huge in size and contain a large volume of liquid, the force is extremely strong and can cause buoyancy leading to a damage to the tank.

While installing a tank, the two important factors that should be taken care of includes weather conditions and groundwater pattern. Many areas tend to collect water and backfill material which is not a favorable situation while installing an underground water storage tank. Weather can change anytime, therefore this situation should be accounted for while installing the tank. There are a number of elements to prevent an underground water storage tank from floating. These include the following:

Bury the underground water storage tanks deeper as the weight of the backfill will exert downward pressure which will counteract the effects of buoyancy. The full depth of cover should be placed to protect the tank from floating.

An alternative is deadman anchors, in cases, where the burial depth cannot be increased. They are made of reinforced concrete which provides additional stability and prevents flotation. In some cases, full concrete hold down pads are required to be placed below the tank.

In many cases, when placing water during the construction phase, ballast for the tank is provided which prevents flotation. Also pumping of the groundwater during construction is recommended until the tank is completely backfilled.

Use thick paving slabs above the tank when placing the same as it will create more downward pressure and keep the underground storage tank in place.

One single issue does not cause flotation but a sequence of missteps is the reason behind the occurrence. These precautions are important and should be followed to keep the tank in place.  It should start right from the beginning at the time of planning and construction.

A permission has to be taken before installing such tank as it is illegal to install the same without a permission from Municipal authorities. A permission is also required to make sure that the building or the flat or the house where the installation will take place is stable and strong enough to take the load of the tank and the limitation of the quantity of water that has to be used. Please make note that the permission is easily available for a fee and there is a process to apply for the same which can be checked on Municipal Corporation’s website. Certain points that have to be kept in mind before installing this type of tank are as follows:

  • Wooden platforms should not be used as they are uneven and hence not good enough to take the weight of the tank properly.

  • Avoid corrugated iron decking at the base.

  • Enough space should be kept in between the roof and the tank if installing indoors for the cleaning of the tank regularly.

  • Avoid hot rods or pipes and use a hole saw to for the drilling of inlet and outlet holes.

  • All pipework must be done properly to avoid any strain on the tank.

A Glimpse At The Layered Water Tanks

A Glimpse At The Layered Water Tanks

Plastic Water Tanks are marked safe for different uses. They are highly durable and rust and corrosion free. They provide a better quality of water which means better health for you and your family. Of late plastic, tanks have taken over the others and are the most preferred type of Water Tank in India at present. Plastic water tanks are classified on the basis of different layers, manufactured as per the consumers’ need and requirement. We have observed different colored and types of water tanks and its importance. But what exactly is a layered water tank? What are its importance and uses? How does it differentiate from each other? Let us look at the answers below.

Single Layered Plastic Water Tanks:

These water tanks have a single layer of plastic. Therefore they are not UV stabilized and do not protect the water tanks from the harsh ultraviolet rays of sunlight. Continous exposure in the sun leads to bacteria growth called algae in water tanks which are extremely harmful to the human use. These are considered as lower quality water tanks than double, triple or four-layered and henceforth the most economical to buy.

Double Layer Plastic Water Tanks:

These water tanks have two layers of plastic. First is the outermost layer and the second layer is the colored layer for visibility or UV stabilized. They are definitely better than single layered tanks but inferior to triple or four layer tanks. These are the most economical layered tank for a healthy use of water. It costs slightly more than a single-layered tank but less than a triple or four layer tanks.

Triple Layer Plastic Water Tanks:

these water tanks have three layers of plastic. One layer serves as the outermost layer, the second layers serve as UV protection and the third layer serves for better visibility. They are better than double layer tanks and are highly durable. They cost more than single and double layer water tanks. They are leak proof and corrosion and rust free.

Four Layer Plastic Water Tanks:

These water tanks have three layers of plastic and one layer of Poly Urethane Foam. Foam layer helps in resisting against extreme warm and cold temperatures outside. They are the best and super quality tanks with the highest strength and longest durability. They are the costliest of all mentioned above but it is worth spending on these tanks because of its superior most quality.

How to control the growth of algae in your water storage tank?

How to control the growth of algae in your water storage tank?

Domestic water storage tanks require proper care to keep the water healthy. Water is an essential natural resource and therefore preserving a safe water is a must. Water is life and pure and safe water is a must to lead a healthy life. Direct exposure to sunlight accelerates the growth of algae. In case of overhead water tanks, this is a common problem faced especially during summers as the tank is always exposed to direct sun.

Algae is a bacteria that carry harmful toxins for consumption. In order to prevent it from the growth of algae, there are certain precautions to be taken. To keep the water algae free, follow the simple steps mentioned below:

  • Use an opaque water storage tank. Change the water tank color from white to black. The ultraviolet rays in sunlight damage the plastic of the tank. Therefore black colored tanks are so popular as it absorbs all the harsh UV rays of the sun and does not allow it to enter the tank. the other way is to get the tank painted black inside if you prefer another color outside. But nowadays even other colored water tanks come with UV radiators that protect the same from the harmful ultraviolet rays.
  • Clean the tank properly every three to six months in case of indirect sunlight. In case of direct sunlight, cleaning should be done more often. Drain all water and give a good scrubbing to the tank. Use appropriate supplies to clean the tank and thoroughly rinse before you refill them. Do not forget to filter the tank after it is cleaned as it further helps in removing loose algae.
  • Certain chemicals like chlorine stop algae growth. It is ideal to add 4 parts of chlorine to every 1,000,000 parts of water. The water is safe to drink with this proportion. This ratio is very important and should be followed otherwise the water might become harmful.
  • Bleach kills algae and stops its further growth. Add 1/4 teaspoon of bleach to every gallon of water stored. The ratio again is important here otherwise it may have negative effects on the water.
  • Another simple way is to keep the tank covered with tarpaulin or grass or natural vegetation around the tanks can also be planted such as creepers.

With these simple tips, you can keep the algae at bay and ensure your safety for years to come.

The other everyday household activities include cleaning, mopping, washing clothes, bathing, brushing etc which we tend to overlook. It is important to ensure that the water stored inside remains bacteria free and clean for all users. Algae and other bacteria grow inside the tank over time which is harmful if the tank is not cleaned regularly. It is recommended to clean the plastic water tank at least once in a year or more often depending upon the use, size or source of water used to fill the tank. There is a proper process to be followed while cleaning the tank which is discussed below in detail:penguin tank_3

  • Keep the place clean where the tank is placed including the top of the tank.
  • The tools used for tank cleaning should be disinfected with antibacterial spray or liquid bleach.
  • Drain the water tank completely with the help of outlet valve.
  • The remaining water can be scooped out using a bucket or a mug.
  • Water can also be sucked up using a vacuum or a clean dry cloth.
  • Make a cleaning solution for cleaning the inside of the tank. A liquid or detergent powder can be used for the same.
  • Scrub the inside of the tank properly. No corner should be left out. Use a bristle brush or a soft sponge, do not use steel brushes or steel sponges as it is too harsh for a plastic tank. They help in removing dirt, fungus, and stains.
  • A power washer can also be used. They come in different sizes and are of different variety. Walls, ceiling, and floor are washed using these. Be careful while using them as they are very powerful and follow all the safety regulations.
  • Use baking soda to clean the dirt from the walls. Add Chlorine bleach to disinfect the water tank completely. Leave the mixture in the tank for some time and make sure no one comes in contact with this solution as it is harmful.
  • Fill the tank with water and make it run to clean the water pipes.
  • Vaccum the tank again and let it dry completely.
  • The tank is clean and ready to be filled with water again.

It is absolutely necessary to follow these points while cleaning the tank properly.

Why is it beneficial to buy new Plastic Water Storage Tank over repairing an expired one?

Considering the plastic tank, they are broadly used by the Indian consumer for domestic use and for commercial use as well. They are a sort of storage containers used to store water. With greater impact strength and its superior resistance to rust, corrosion and fuel additives, it has proofed to be better than any iron or steel tanks. So, why would it be better to buy a new tank over repairing a broken tank?

Suppose, your tank is broken, may be due to rust or natural calamities or by any external body.

If it is a new tank and it has got light incisions or crack then it can be repaired with a small and cost-effective tool. But if you are trying to fix an old tank than it is hard to assume it to be a good idea. Old tanks might damage over time due to long usage. It may, not only took you several days but also a significant amount investment for repairing the tanks and you definitely won’t want it to repeat the same again and again.

So, points that will bring light to why you should buy a new plastic water storage tank over repairing an old one, are as follows:

  • Time-consuming: Needless to say anything that needs to repair will require time. And if you get to wait several hours for your number to come to use the washroom, due to the scarcity of water, what else to say.
  •  Increases Expenses: If you don’t have enough equipment at home either you have to buy them or get it done by a mechanic. Either way, it involves several expenses.
  •  No guarantee over its repair: Even after spending so much time and money in repairing your tank, it might not give you desired result or it may get damaged over again from the same or different angles and while making a continuous repair, you might actually pay the half amount of a new water tank.

Does The Water Remain Safe In plastic water storage tank?

Does The Water Remain Safe In plastic water storage tank?

The water, like any other fluid, does not have any particular shape and it takes the shape of the container. But during the same, it also acquires several other qualities of the plastic container as well. The same holds true for water as well. The safety of stored water in a plastic water storage tank is a matter of discussion.

Though the quality of water stored in a steel water tank is also a matter of debate. The corrosion of the internal layer can contaminate the water as well.

If the water is being supplied by the municipality, it is often safe to assume that the quality. So, if it is being treated or filtered before supplying, it is well and good. If it is not, for example in case of rainwater harvesting, very little can be done to purify it inside the tank.

It is important to understand that a water storage tank is not a water purifier. It cannot purify and make water portable. The best water storage tank can do is to ensure that it does not facilitate the algae formation and germ buildup.

The use of poor quality plastic may influence the chemical composition of water up to a large extent. It might even go unnoticed for a short period of time, but after a time being, it will start to project a peculiar ‘plastic’ taste in the stored water. Which is why it is recommended to go for a tank that has been made with food grade material.

Also, the shape of the tank plays a vital role in the same. The round cross-section of a cylindrical tank ensures that the water receives maximum circulation, upon opening of any of the water channel or tap. This facilitates the water circulation and thereby prohibits the growth of algae or any other pathogen inside.

Special features like ultraviolet guard is an additional per, that goes a step further than usual and ensure that the water does not get affected due to the long hours of exposure to the ultraviolet component of the sunlight.

The plastic water storage tanks offered by the house of penguin are made up of food grade material, which ensures the purity of water. Also, it is manufactured with multiple layers, each with a distinct advantage to ensure the good quality of water stored. The roto-molding manufacturing process ensures a uniform cross section and even thickness of each layer. It is a quality product designed, manufactured and offered to enable you to have aces to clean, fresh healthy water every hour of the day.
