Can Cold Weather Affect Your Domestic Plastic Water Storage Tank?

Cold weather and water together always make the worst combination. A frozen water tank is a common problem for many households, especially in places where it is extremely cold or extremely hot weather conditions. In the case of an outdoor water tank installation, the tanks come in direct contact with the changing temperatures of India. Some regions face moderate cold and some extreme cold in the winters of India. With plastic water tanks too, it remains a problem if the tank is not incorporated with insulated layers that help to maintain the temperature of the tank pretty well.

There are certain ways in which freezing of tanks can be addressed. Read here to know more : How To Keep Water Storage Tanks From Freezing in Winter ?

Now you know how to keep the water storage tanks from freezing in the winter season. To avoid an adverse effect on water storage tanks, many tank owners prefer to have an underground one or install the tank in the greenhouse to avoid it to come in direct contact with the extreme ranging temperatures outside. The theory is simple here that very cold or extreme cold temperatures can certainly affect the plastic water storage tanks and the water that is stored inside.

The best solution to this problem is to use the best quality plastic water storage tanks that are insulated well to maintain the temperature inside and prevent the water from freezing. Here we refer to plastic water storage tanks from the house of Penguin Tank. The leader of the plastic water tank manufacturer in India that specializes in clean and durable plastic water tanks for both domestic and commercial uses. These ISO Certified plastic water storage tanks possess some extraordinary features such as the following:

• Threaded Lids save the tank from outside dust and dirt and keep all the unwanted objects out of the tank by preventing its entry inside through the super-tight threaded lids.

• The linear low-density polyethylene material is extra strong and durable that is supposedly the best quality plastic material which is BPA free and therefore ensures water safety at its best.

• Most importantly, our plastic water storage tanks come with not one but two insulated foam layers i.e. insulated foam layer 1 and insulated foam layer 2. The dual insulation layers do not allow extreme cold weather to affect the water quality and water tank from both inside and outside of the tank.

Therefore, it can be concluded by saying that cold weather can affect domestic plastic water storage tanks except if it is Penguin Tank. Get it to your home this winter.

Some Important Facts About Storing Water That You Should Know

Water storage is essential whether for drinking, bathing, cooking, sanitation and so on. Water storage is very different from food storage and therefore it requires extra attention. Water stored needs to be protected against viruses, bacterias, dust, dirt, insects, and contamination. Contaminated water is the major reason behind several health ailments. Therefore, let us discuss some important water-storing facts.

Does Water Expire?

Water does not expire or go bad, but it can get contaminated(chemically or biologically). The stale taste of water can be removed by rotating and purifying water. If the water storage container is in a good working condition i.e. water stored in a cool and dark place, not directly on concrete or near harsh fumes and chemicals, water can be stored indefinitely. Water exposed to direct sunlight will cause algae to grow which is considered harmful for human consumption. Therefore, a good quality water storage tank plays a crucial role in determining the quality of water that is stored inside to be used in the future for all household needs.

Is it Safe To Store Water In Any Plastic Container?

Plastic has a nature of absorbing colours and flavours very easily and therefore any ordinary plastic container is not recommended to store water. Water can quickly take in the chemical taste and become unsafe to drink. A plastic container or plastic water storage tank made from high-quality polyethylene material such as linear low-density polyethylene is ideal for water storage as it is BPA free and made from food-grade material. Do not reuse disposable water bottles, which is a common practice in India.

Can Water Barrels Be Stacked To Save Space?

Most water barrels are not built to stack on each other. They are safe to store standing and avoid to store barrels on cement or the floor in the garage. Instead, place it on top of wood board or cardboard so that smell and chemicals do not leach in. If you want to save space just like you save water, consider plastic water tanks.

Is A Water Filter Needed Even If The Water Is Treated Well?

Water purifiers like chlorine dioxide kill 99.9% of all microorganisms such as protozoa, bacteria, and viruses in the water. However, it won’t remove turbidities such as dirt, silt, floats, and other chemicals from the water. Therefore, a purifier and filter together work best to remove all water contaminants from the water. Water is safe and clean to use after passing through both.

Therefore, follow the above to get safe and clean water for daily household uses.

Water at the best time :

The best time to water the garden is in the morning and early in the evening as there is less evaporation due to the cool temperature. It also needs time to let the surface dry to the avoid fungus that can destroy the plants.

Use the right amount of water:

Most of us make a mistake of over watering plant and hence we promote wastage. For instance, clay-based soils require less water and light sandy soils need to be watered more. So, water them carefully.

Check weather and soils:

Consider the climate such as high humidity, freezing cold weather, windy, rainy or dry and the type of soil while watering the garden. Soils vary with location and adding mulch on top of the soil prevents moisture from evaporating. Add organic matter to the soil to improve texture and retain moisture. Compost is also a good option to retain moisture.

Collect rainwater and reuse water:

During the rainy season, collect rainwater in buckets and water the plants with these as they have natural nutrients. Reuse water from baths, washing machines, wastewater from water purifiers, and cooking while gardening.

Plant water conserving trees and shrubs:

Select drought-tolerant plants to save water. Prefer locally grown plants as they have adapted to the nature and climatic conditions of your area. Try to group the plants together in order to water them easily and more efficiently. In case if you have planted in containers, place the big ones around them. They will save the small plants from evaporating.

What are algae and how does it benefit our ecosystem?

We often get to see the green stuff floating in the bodies of water. Have you ever wondered what is it? It is algae. Yes, we are referring to algae. But what exactly is it and what does it do? Let us find the answer.

Algae may have been around for more than 475 million years on Earth. They are found in different sizes ranging from microscopic unicellular species such as Chlorella to massive multicellular one such as the Giant Kelp. Mostly seen in green but can be found in brown, red and cyan colours. They are most commonly seen in freshwater and saltwater environments apart from tree trunks, in soils, snow banks and hot springs. The different factors influencing the growth of algae include the process of photosynthesis, carbon dioxide, an optimum temperature ranging between 16 to 35-degree Celsius and nutrients like nitrogen and phosphorus.

The growth of algae in water storage tanks is not safe and therefore we recommend you to use high-quality water storage tanks that prevents its growth. Although they are considered harmful for human consumption, there are many other beneficial uses of algae which many of us are not aware of. Yes, you heard it right. Algae can be beneficial to us in many ways. Let us see how.

Algae generate about 50% of oxygen on Earth by using photosynthesis to pull carbon dioxide from the atmosphere to create oxygen.

Algae is being used as soil conditioners, fertilisers and cattle feed.

They provide a strong alternative to fossil fuels by producing energy-rich oils. The bio fuels that they produce does not release any additional carbon dioxide into the atmosphere.

They are a rich source of many vitamins and micronutrients and therefore have high nutritional value. Some algal varieties are high in omega 3 fatty acids which are preferred by vegetarians as fish oil is the only alternative source of the same.

Algae can treat sewage and eliminate the need for toxic chemicals in the process.

Algae are one of the main sources of food for the aquatic creatures.

In short, algae are essential to the ecosystem. We assume that there are many more benefits of algae which is yet to be explored and exploited. The research is on and will be unveiled soon.
