This Children’s Day Know About The Safety Of Water For Children

Did you know that at least 1 million children die every year due to water-borne diseases in India? Out of them, at least 6,00,000 children are under the age of five and they mostly die due to inadequate supply of water. Even though India is progressing every day in each field, we still have a long way to go. If we can’t protect our children, then there will be no future for our country. Yet, we lose so many children every year just because they didn’t have access to safe water. While medically we have progressed so much and so many doctors are born in our country every day, it is a shame that one-third of all deaths of children under the age of five in India are due to diarrhoea and pneumonia. But this contamination is very much preventable through maintenance and following sanitisation practices.

Other than groundwater, India’s main sources of drinking water are the rivers in all states. While the government takes steps to give access to safe and clean groundwater in rural areas, it is our job to keep the rivers clean and not waste unnecessary water. Tanks sit at one place for many years. Therefore, it is quite obvious for dust and dirt to build upon the exterior of the tank. It is necessary to clean these substances that are stick on for years by using a sander. Make sure to drain the tank completely before starting the work. Let the tank cool completely in order to set the filler. Test the water tank and check on the leaking. If it is not, then the repair is successfully done but if it is still leaking, you need to make a tighter seal again.

Water is essential and we cannot imagine a single day without its use. We use water every day to stay alive including multiple other uses. Pure water provides good health and keeps our body disease free. According to a research, it has been identified that the origin of water is older than the sun approximately 4.6 billion years old. Therefore, we should not waste water and conserve it. We take water supply for granted and misuse in many ways. By saving water, we also save energy used for pumping and treating the same. We celebrate March 22 as the World Water Day every year but forget that it is scarce. Lets us make a resolution in this new year that we will save water as much as we can.

Let us pick a few things to start with and try to do more with time.

  • Take shorter showers instead of a bath as the latter saves five times more water than the former.
  • Strictly turn off the tap water while brushing, shaving or washing up when not in use. Regularly check for the leakage of taps. A leaking tap can waste up 120 litres of water every day.
  • Do not flush the toiled unnecessary. Dispose of cigarettes, tissues or other waste in the dustbin rather than the toilet.
  • Store drinking water in the refrigerator so that you don’t have to open the tap everytime you want to drink cool water. The same theory applies to cooking water as well.
  • When doing the dishes, fill up the sink with soapy water to save unnecessary wastage of water running down without any use.
  • Washing machines should be fully loaded for optimum water conservation while washing clothes. Use your washing machine in an Eco-friendly way.
  • Use recycled papers instead of printed ones as it saves 20000 litres of water.
  • Make a provision to collect rainwater by installing best quality water storage tanks. Rainwater collection can be used for both domestic and commercial purposes. This practice not only saves water but also avoids an overloading of drainage systems during flooding.
  • Use less water while washing your car.
  • Water the garden economically. Make use of drain water for watering plants instead of throwing it away. Instead of watering, soak it deeply.

Water conservation should come naturally after knowing its importance. It can be taught or forced to someone. Take this step now which can make a big difference in saving our mother nature.

Steel Or Plastic Water Storage Tanks? This is a commonly asked question and both have its own advantages and disadvantages. A buyer’s main concern is strength and longevity. Although steel is supposed to be heavier than poly water tanks it cannot withstand corrosion and should be kept away from salty sea water or chlorine. On the other hand, plastic water storage tanks are non- corrosive and require less maintenance.

Plastics usually age with continuous exposure to heat, light, and oxygen. UV stabilizers in plastics prevent them from becoming brittle and decomposing. The chemicals used are similar to those used in sunscreen products which protect the skin from the harmful UV rays. It protects them from loss of strength, flexibility, and stiffness. The main issue with steel one is the maintenance and an inner poly lining is recommended to protect against corrosion.

Plastic water storage tanks are comparatively easier to install and less expensive to transport as it is lighter than the steel tanks. Less labor is needed to install the former. Poly tanks can be set up with a tank self-cleaning system while stainless steel requires a lot of care and expensive maintenance.
